CHOOSING GEOTHERMAL

Building green is more than a trend. Building a home according to superior energy efficiency standards has become a concern for many homeowners.

Alain Brasseur, owner of a large family farm, living in the small ancestral home built on the land, has carefully planned the construction of the new home for his family. Since he intended to build his new residence according to ecological preservation criteria and maximum efficiency, Mr. Brasseur selected his materials, accessories and units in order to reach and even surpass Novoclimat requirements.

The owner was first interested in geothermal technology after reading various articles in magazines and specialized publications. A particular story about a large geothermal project on a poultry farm convinced him on the performance of geothermal systems and their relevance in agricultural areas. When it was time to choose the heating and cooling mode of their new home, he analyzed the various options on the market and geothermal soon appeared to him as the ideal option due to ecological features, substantial energy savings, simple project implementation and service life of the system. INSTALLATION COSTS

The cost of installing a vertical type closed loop, the most common geothermal loop, requires expert drilling services and average costs are estimated at $15,000. Given the size of the land available near the new construction and the possibility of involving Mr. Brasseur in the installation of the loop, it quickly became obvious to opt for a horizontal slinky shaped loop costing a total $4,000, which represents savings of almost 75%.


RESULTS

The whole installation process was easily executed. Just one glitch: a heavy rain fall delayed the excavation work. The trenches filled with water and they had to install pumps to remove excess water before laying down the pipe. But no one can predict or control Mother Nature's mood swings…

The Brasseur family are fully satisfied with the performance of their new geothermal system and said that they enjoyed remarkable comfort throughout the winter.
